August 2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at The Emory House Bed & Breakfast. The guest rooms are beautifully decorated and welcoming.

Rocky, Jayne and Emmy are so gracious. It was such a treat to have refreshments on the porch after a long drive. In the morning, waking up to the aroma of coffee and something yummy in the oven was divine.

We made our reservations for a return trip.

May 2015

We stayed at Emory House during a college visit tour. The B&B made us want our son to choose Emory College so that we could plan on returning to this B&B frequently. It is so well appointed and each room is decorated with an eye for color and design. Ask to see the Lodge and all of the other rooms to learn how they grew the house from a doctor’s home and office to this stunning property. Tracy is a talented Jack-of-all-Trades who designs, builds, decorates, cooks, gardens, paints and welcomes guests. I am sure she hunts and fishes too! We felt at home here and wished our time there was longer. You will thoroughly love your time at The Emory House; we did.   P.H.

April 2015
Our son was getting married at Emory & Henry College in April 2015. We have several children, spouses, spouses to be, and grandchildren that were traveling with us to the wedding. As some are grown and don’t live close to us we wanted to be able to spend as much time as possible all together, as it is not as often as we would like. We were looking for a place that we could all be in one place instead of separate hotel rooms especially with the children having space to play. The Emory house was the perfect choice for our family. It was comfortable and homey, not stuffy like many B&B’s are. The bedrooms very roomy, and the bathrooms were large, updated, and made it possible for several people to get ready at one time. The yard was perfect for the kids to safely play in. We enjoyed the breakfasts that were prepared each morning, snacks and beverages always available. Rocky and Tracy were excellent hosts, very hospitable, and easy to work with on questions and making the reservations. The groomsmen all stayed in the Edmondson Lodge at The Emory House the night before the wedding and really enjoyed the setting, space, and history that is displayed in it. Thank you so much Rocky and Tracy for providing our family and wedding party with an excellent experience and family time. We would definitely recommend staying here whether as a family or as a couples getaway.

Hi Rocky and Tracy;
Just wanted to say again what a splendid B&B the Emory House is . . . especially that potato casserole!  You all have done a great job with décor, comfort and amenities.  I hope to bring my husband back in the near future for a visit.  He will love it all too!

The Best Bed and Breakfast!

The Emory House was the best B&B experience I’ve ever had!  The house is so beautiful, the food was AMAZING, and the host is hospitable without being hovering.  I felt totally pampered while I was there and can’t wait to go back.

Thank you, Rocky, for taking such good care of us!  We loved it.

Our Wonderful Stay

My husband and I stayed at The Emory House as our first night away from our little one who is thirteen months. Rocky Underwood, the owner, greeted us with delicious cookies as soon as we arrived. As we had a great conversation in the stunning gourmet kitchen, he insisted I pull up a stool and have some cold milk with my cookies. From start to finish our stay was special. That is the word I will coin for our stay, “special.” My husband and I were shown throughout the house, which is beautiful and interesting from the exquisite “Underwood Room” to the comfy cozy “Carolina Suite”. We stayed in the Underwood room, which is also considered the bridal suite. When we walked in I took note of the beautiful arrangements of flowers which I thought were silk. Then come to find out they were fresh flowers on our night stand. Again….special!!! The bedding and décor was lovely, the bathroom was roomy and there was a large tub for soaking. We went out for dinner and enjoyed a show at the Barter Theatre. When we returned later that evening there was a bottle of wine and two glasses waiting on us. We woke to the smell of coffee, and before we could make it downstairs the aroma of the breakfast that awaited us filled the room. Breakfast was AMAZING!! Rocky offers several options and always aims to please. The attention to detail and southern hospitality was stellar. In winter this place was fantastic. I can only imagine the grounds in spring and fall. I simply cannot say enough positive things about our stay. I can confidently say that we will visit again….soon!!!

We just returned home from a 2000 mile trip through the Southeastern U.S.  Our visit to the Abingdon/Emory area was a terrific stop made so much so by the Emory House B&B and its owner/operator, Rocky Underwood.  While he claims to be a novice innkeeper, he is anything but!  The hospitality was second to none, and the house itself is exceptionally well appointed.  Breakfast was superb, and the company was excellent.  While Abingdon is over 700 miles from our home, we will make it a point to visit here and the Emory House again.

Excellent Breakfast and Impeccable Service

Cheryl and I enjoyed our stay at your Bed and Breakfast. The room was great, comfortable and spacious. The leather sofas in our bedroom were a welcome addition for relaxing. The bathroom was spacious and the shower and fixtures were excellent. It was a welcome addition when we saw hardwood flooring throughout the living area. I have COPD and carpet is not good for me. We also want to comment on the layout of the building and grounds; all were setup for easy relaxed living. The breakfast was excellent and the service impeccable. We would certainly stay with you again. — Richard

A Slice of Real Virginia Hospitality

Dear Rocky,

We would like to thank you for the incredible hospitality and lovely breakfasts you prepared on our first visit to Virginia.  Your warm greeting when we arrived late due to a flight delay made us feel very welcome.

It was a beautiful time of year to visit Southwest Virginia.  Your gorgeous home and comfortable, clean, well appointed rooms invited us to relax, regenerate and “sit a spell.”  We also appreciated your  close proximity to  Emory & Henry College (where our daughter-in-law teaches) but away from the hustle and bustle.  We found your location and relaxing atmosphere close enough to tour and take in the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains, history and culture of the area.

We would recommend Emory Bed & Breakfast to anyone who is interested in a slice of real Virginia hospitality!!

Recently my boyfriend and I decided to take a trip to Abingdon, VA. After searching and searching for the perfect place to stay, I stumbled onto the Emory House Bed & Breakfast. It was the best decision I have ever made (at least as far as choosing where to stay while on vacation).  Rocky (the B&B owner/operator) is amazing. From making the reservation, to arriving at the Emory House, to leaving for home…he and his friends make you feel welcome and at home. Rocky educated us on the house’s interesting history, as well as the history of the pioneer cabin that is also situated on the property. They provided lovely, clean accommodations, and assisted in whatever we needed; They are very knowledgeable about the area, good antique shopping in Abingdon, dinner reservations, directions, etc. Also, not only were we cooked an amazing breakfast of brie and apple omelets, yogurt, fresh fruit and granola, bacon, and biscuits, but they were nice enough to leave out cookies and milk, and wine and cheese in the evening. Oh, and I must not forget the hot chocolate with marshmallows in the afternoon. The rooms are comfortable and beautiful, the view of Emory & Henry College is delightful, and I’m unable to come up with any criticism for The Emory House. Even the short drive to Abingdon is well worth it (for the record it is only about a 10 min drive). Thanks to Rocky, we had a fantastic stay and plan to stay with them again on our next visit to the area.

A Soccer Mom’s Stay at The Emory House

The Emory House was the best B&B experience I’ve ever had!  The house is so beautiful, the food was AMAZING, and the host is hospitable without being hovering.  I felt totally pampered while I was there and can’t wait to go back.

Thank you, Rocky, for taking such good care of us!  We loved it!

The Emory house is by far the most lovely B and B my husband and I have ever stayed at!  The house has every comfort, and the attention to every detail is there.  Rocky and Tracy  made my husband and I feel like family.  If your looking for a peaceful, country getaway with true Southern hospitality, The Emory house is the place to stay!

My wife and I recently stayed at the Emory House in Emory VA while visiting our daughter who is a freshman at Emory & Henry College. It was one the best experiences we have ever had at a “bed and breakfast” type lodging and we have stayed at several ! Rocky Underwood is the consummate owner/operator… not only is he a wealth of knowledge of things to do, see and eat in the area but also will bend over backwards to see to it that you have everything you could possibly want or need… from scrumptious made to order breakfast… to a special little night cap of your choosing (wine, beer, vodka, hot tea or coffee) and homemade brownies!
The home is wonderfully decorated and very comfortable with several areas inside and out to just relax and take in the beautiful surroundings! Rocky also offers free Wi-Fi thru-out the house for those who have to check email’s etc.  We are very excited to know that we now have a home away from home to visit when we come to see our daughter in the future… in fact we have already made our next reservation !!  You must give this place a try you will not regret it!

October 2013, Homecoming at Emory and Henry College, 45th Class Reunion

Dear Rocky;

I am writing to thank you again for being such a gracious host to us during our stay with you last weekend.  You have created a lovely bed and breakfast home.  Your hospitality makes it very special.

Kathy and I enjoyed spending time and talking with our friends, the Thompsons and the Fields at your B&B.  It was nice to sit in your living room for some of those conversations.

Best wishes to you in your business and second career.  We look forward to a return visit with you.

P.S.  The food was delicious!

Elizabeth and I so enjoyed our recent stay at the Emory House.  The wonderful hospitality and attention to absolutely every detail made us feel so pampered.  It was the perfect way to send her off to college.  She enjoyed meeting Summer and I know they have seen each other a few times in the past several weeks.  I have passed your contact information along to several friends in Richmond that are interested in traveling in that area.  I look forward  more visits with you during Elizabeth’s time at Emory and Henry.    Thank you again for everything.

Cannot say enough nice things about the Emory House B&B.  We stayed there in conjunction with attending the Barter Theatre.  Of the various B&Bs we have visited, this one definitely ranks among the best! Rocky is the perfect host. The wine in the afternoon, various snacks, and ice cream and brownies in the evening were great. A lovely location with furniture that are conversation pieces.  We will definitely return when again we attend another Barter production.

Thank you so much  for the very pleasant Bed and Breakfast stay. Our room was very comfortable,  with excellent bed linens and all the amenities one could ever think of!   The  area is quiet and beautiful and so convenient to either Abingdon for Barter  Theater or to  Damascus for the Virginia Creeper. The breakfast was  outstanding.  The friendly Innkeepers, Rocky, Tracy  and sweet Maggie the  Cairn terrier, greeted us and made us feel so welcomed.  We would  definitely recommend The Emory House and would stay there  again.

 Stay at The Emory House!

What a wonderful bed and breakfast! The location is very tranquil, while still being close to Abingdon for great shopping and dinning. The rooms are comfortable and very tastefully decorated. It was so quiet that I slept like a baby. Rocky and Tracy cook a smashing breakfast, served in a lovely dining room. They treat you like family, while at the same time having several common areas to enjoy if you want some quiet time. Be sure to check out the cabin at the back of the property. Enjoy the wine and cheese in the afternoon, and be sure to check out the local dinning (Rocky and Tracy will find you the perfect place).

We stayed at The Emory House during a visit to Virginia in June 2015, and it was by far the best Bed and Breakfast we have ever experienced.  The rooms are extremely well doe with comfortable, high quality furniture and finishings.  We were able to stay with our 2 sons in one large room, and we had plenty of space and wonderful beds.
Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful in every way, and we were prepared a completely scrumptious breakfast in the morning.  We enjoy staying at small, quaint inns and Bed and Breakfasts frequently, and we recommend The Emory House without hesitation.

What a great stay we had at The Emory House on Sept. 19, 2015.  The accommodations were excellent and the hospitality provided by our host and hostess was really nice.  We were made to feel right at home.  We are planing another stay for two nights in October.  Great B&B!

We Loved our StayMessage Body:
My husband and I recently spent a lovely night in the Hillman Suite. It was beautifully furnished, very comfortable and perfectly suited our needs. The bed was just the right combination of firm + soft and the pillow was heavenly! Upon our arrival, Rocky Underwood greeted us in the parking area and escorted us around to the entrance of the B&B.  I was impressed by all of the natural light that filled each room from the many windows. He answered all of our questions and had made dinner reservations and reserved theatre tickets at the nearby Barter Theatre for us several weeks in advance. He was without a doubt the “host with the most”!I knew we were in store for a treat when the scent of bacon awakened us first thing in the morning. No need for an alarm clock! Breakfast was a delightful experience. Along with thick sliced crisp bacon, we enjoyed pumpkin pancakes with homemade apple cider syrup, and creamy scrambled eggs with dill. My husband said the coffee was delicious. Rocky was kind enough to share recipes with me, but I’m afraid that making these dishes at home just won’t be the same without the love that was put into each dish, and the lively conversation we shared with other guests around the dining room table. Our experience at this B & B will not soon be forgotten. Should our travels take us back to the Abingdon, VA area, I hope we will have another opportunity to enjoy the fine southern hospitality served in generous portions at the Emory House. The Kiralys____________________________

My Mom, Sister and I try to have a “Girls Weekend” every fall. This year, we stayed at The Emory House B&B in the Underwood Suite. It was wonderful – all the comforts of home with the benefits of being away! The Emory House has lovely antiques and beautiful decor – but our suite had very up to date bathrooms, toiletries, linens and internet. Breakfast was excellent each morning – especially the pumpkin pancakes with cinnamon and apple cider syrup. Mr. Underwood gave us great recommendations for local restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, and museums. Wine was set out for us in the evening, and there are porches, a fire pit, and many comfortable places to just sit and relax. In addition to Emory University, the Emory House is convenient to the Virginia Creeper Trail and Abingdon, VA.
